December 28: Bass guitarist Catherine Popper, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, is 40-years-old.

Catherine Popper, from Charlotte, NC, said she began plunking out noise on the family piano, as far back as she can remember. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts for high school and subsequently the Manhattan School of Music.


From 2004 to 2006, Popper played bass, double bass, and sang back up vocals for Ryan Adams with the group The Cardinals. She shared songwriting credits for many songs on the band's albums from those years.

Catherine has also played with Norah Jones in her side project Puss N Boots, Michael Stipe and she toured and recorded with Hem early that decade.

Starting in 2009, Popper joined Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on tour and for the band's self-titled fifth album, released on June 8, 2010, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The album was produced by Mark Batson and debuted at #19 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums for the week ending June 13, 2010.

On November 14, 2011, Popper announced her departure from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals for the "foreseeable future" on her Facebook page.


In January 2012, Popper appeared on David Letterman, performing "Travel As Equals" with Joseph Arthur.
