September 6: R&B and soul singer-songwriter Macy Gray - "I'll Try" - is 46-years-old today.

-----
Born Natalie Renee McIntyre - and also credited as Natalie Hinds - Macy is known for her distinctive raspy voice and a singing style influenced by Billie Holiday. Besides singing and song writing, she is also a record producer, and actress. She was born in Canton, Ohio where she worked (briefly) for the Football Hal of Fame until she was fired for lateness.
She decided to pursue a career in music after being expelled from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson. While attending the University of Southern California where she graduated from in 1990, she agreed to write songs for a friend, and a demo session was scheduled for the songs to be recorded by another singer. When the vocalist failed to turn up, Gray recorded them herself.
